Festivals in Costa da Morte in summer

After a long winter and a rather grey spring, summer seems to finally be back around us in Muxía, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to share with you some of my favorite festivals in the Costa da Morte during the sunny season.

Asalto ao Castelo – Vimianzo (first weekend in July)

For several years, the Axvalso Cultural Association and the Cherinkas Youth Association have been organizing a recreation of the assault on the San Roque castle, an event that recreates the Irmandiña revolt against the abuses of the nobles.

The recreation is a comic-dramatic-fictional performance in which everyone can participate. The town also organizes concerts and a market, so it’s wonderful to spend a day there too. It has been declared a Festival of Galician Tourist Interest.

Mercado das Rutas do Mar (second weekend in August)

This festival is definitely one of the best ones in my opinion. In it, the whole town dresses up in Medieval costumes and you can find many stalls in which locals showcase handmade crafts, traditional Galician cuisine, particularly dishes that highlight local seafood and cultural activities such as live music, traditional dance performances, and storytelling sessions.

The Mercado das Rutas do Mar is not just a marketplace but a cultural event that celebrates the deep connection between the community of Muxía and the sea. It provides both locals and visitors with a chance to enjoy and appreciate the maritime traditions and lifestyle of the region.

Virxe do Carme – Camariñas (July 16th)

This festival celebrates the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors. In this treachourous sea, sailors seek the protection of the Virgin with a maritime procession. The Virgin’s statue is taken out to sea on decorated boats, accompanied by traditional music and food. Boats leave Camariñas in the morning one can hop on a boat to enjoy a ride around the bay. This festival used to be celebrated in Muxía too but it has recently disappeared due to legislation requirements for boat owners.
