Does Spain celebrate Halloween? The short answer is not traditionally, but not all regions are the same… Galicia, on the Northwest of Spain, has many traditions linked to the Autumn season. Here is one more text for our series on bilingual texts which dives into this tradition.
Halloween in Galicia
Aunque en casi todo España se considera que Halloween es una fiesta “americana”, aquí en Galicia existe desde hace mucho tiempo. En esta región, se llama “samaín” y es una fiesta de origen celta que se celebra en la noche del 31 de octubre al 1 de noviembre 🍂.
Although in almost all of Spain Halloween is considered an “American” holiday, here in Galicia it has existed for a long time. In this region, it is called “samaín” and it is a festival of Celtic origin that is celebrated on the night of October 31 to November 1 🍂.
El año nuevo celta
El Samhain era la festividad pagana más importante en Europa hasta la llegada del cristianismo. Para los celtas, el año se dividía en una “época oscura”, donde las noches eran largas y frías, y una “época clara”, donde había sol y calor. Samaín celebraba el final de la temporada de verano, y comenzaba así el invierno. Además, la fecha señalaba el comienzo del año en el calendario celta. Era como un Año Nuevo.
Samhain was the most important pagan holiday in Europe until the arrival of Christianity. For the Celts, the year was divided into a “dark time”, where the nights were long and cold, and a “light time”, where there was sun and heat.
Samaín celebrated the end of the summer season, and thus began winter. Furthermore, the date marked the beginning of the year in the Celtic calendar. It was like a New Year.
Chulas de calabaza
Hoy en día, queda poco de las tradiciones celtas pero es cierto que las calabazas 🎃 todavía están muy presentes. Son la verdura típica de esta época del año. Con las calabazas se prepara un dulce que se llama “las chulas”. Las chulas son una masa de calabaza frita. Están deliciosas.
Today, little remains of Celtic traditions but it is true that pumpkins🎃 are still very present. They are the typical vegetable of this time of year. A sweet called “las chulas” is prepared with the pumpkins. Chulas are a fried pumpkin dough. They are delicious.
