This week, I’m starting a new section in the blog to compliment Tomamos un café, our Spanish conversation group. Each month, I’ll write a short bilingual post about a cultural topic that is sure to interest you. This month, I’ll start with Easter (Semana Santa in Spain), a holiday that is marked by tradition in Spain.

Procesiones / Processions

La Semana Santa es una fiesta de origen religioso que sigue estando muy presente en todo España, particularmente en Andalucía. La imagen más popular de la semana Santa es sin duda la imagen de las procesiones. En esta imagen, podéis ver una procesión llevada por nazarenos que llevan capirotes rojos, túnicas blancas y la imagen de la Virgen.

Holy Week is a celebration of religious origin that continues to be very present throughout Spain, particularly in Andalusia. The most popular image of Easter is undoubtedly the image of the processions. In this image, you can see a procession led by Nazarenes wearing red hoods, white robes and the image of the Virgin.

Capirotes / Hoods

Los capirotes son a menudo un símbolo malinterpretado. tienen su origen en la Inquisición española, pero con el paso del tiempo se convirtió en el traje típico de las procesiones de Semana Santa. Desgraciadamente, fue víctima de la apropiación cultural por parte del Ku Klux Klan, que basó su vestimenta blanca en el uniforme de la Hermandad de los Negritos de Sevilla. Paradójicamente, esta hermandad fue la primera institución en toda Europa dirigida y sostenida por las propias víctimas de la esclavitud africana.

The hoods are often a symbol that is misinterpreted. These hoods have their origin in the Spanish Inquisition, but over time they became the typical dress of Holy Week’s processions. Unfortunately, it was the victim of cultural appropriation by the Ku Klux Klan, which based their white clothing on the uniform of the Brotherhood of the “Negritos de Sevilla”. Paradoxically, this brotherhood was the first institution in all of Europe directed and supported by the victims of African slavery themselves.

Torrijas / Sweet bread
