Learn Spanish with Netflix | 5 tips to help you

Netflix isn’t just for binge-watching your favorite shows—it’s also a fantastic tool for learning Spanish! Whether you’re a beginner or brushing up on your advanced skills, combining entertainment with education can make language learning more fun and effective.

Here are five tips to make the most of Netflix for your Spanish journey:

1. Listening Alone Doesn’t Improve Speaking

When my students start learning Spanish, many decide that watching a film on Netflix is a good way to improve their skills. And it’s true—listening to Spanish will definitely help. However, listening doesn’t necessarily improve speaking.

It might seem obvious, but this is a common frustration for learners: “I watch so many movies,” they say, “but when it comes to speaking, I freeze.” The explanation is simple: if you want to improve your speaking, you need to practice speaking.

While listening can help you gain vocabulary and improve comprehension, the fastest way to improve your speaking skills is by actively engaging in conversations.

2. Choose Content Strategically: Have an Objective in Mind

This brings me to my second point: learning Spanish through movies and series is most effective when you have a clear objective. For example:

  • Want to improve your cooking vocabulary? Watch cooking shows or documentaries about food.
  • Interested in slang and informal expressions? Try series with younger characters, such as Elite or La Casa de Papel.
  • Need to practice listening skills? Documentaries often feature slower-paced narration and helpful visuals to enhance comprehension.

By aligning your viewing choices with your goals, you’ll get the most out of your Netflix sessions.

3. Movies in Spanish Aren’t Always the Best Option

While native Spanish films and series are valuable, they aren’t the only option. Watching a movie you already know in its dubbed Spanish version can be just as effective. Familiarity with the plot and characters gives you more mental bandwidth to focus on the language itself.

For instance, re-watching a favorite movie in Spanish can help you memorize common phrases and expressions. You already know the story—now you can focus on pronunciation and vocabulary.

PS: even analyzing the titles can be a fascinating exercise!!

4. Stick to One Series and Re-watch for Mastery

With Netflix’s endless options, it’s tempting to jump from show to show. However, sticking to one series and re-watching episodes can significantly enhance your learning.

  • The first time, enjoy the story.
  • The second or third time, pay closer attention to the language. Observe pronunciation, intonation, and sentence structure.
  • Take advantage of Netflix’s pause and replay features. If you encounter unfamiliar words or phrases, pause, jot them down, and replay the scene. Create a vocabulary list to review later.

Repetition is key. This method helped me when watching Friends in English —I re-watched it so many times that I memorized some of the lines by heart!

5. Set Your Netflix Interface to Spanish

Change your Netflix account language to Spanish. This small adjustment exposes you to more vocabulary in daily contexts, such as show titles, descriptions, and settings. Every bit of exposure counts when building your language skills.
